The Foxy Garden
This very large corner site was shrouded in tired and thirsty conventional lawn. Really a bland, uninteresting monoculture—impossible to maintain especially in light of our dwindling resources and our growing understanding about sustainable practices.
We chose to approach this project not with the idea that existing lawn is bad, but with respect for what lawn has historically represented: a socially connective tissue.
Instead of conventional grass requiring endlessly large amounts of water, chemicals and mowing, this lawn conversion shifts to a naturalistic native meadow mix splashed with wildflowers and drought tolerant native shrubs. It was the clients’ desire to be wrapped by a garden attracting native pollinators and beneficial insects. A wildlife photographer, they wanted the opportunity to open windows and doors and feel immediately connected to a coastal native environment.
The handsome new stone walls, stairs and massive boulders became the structural framework containing the loose, coastal sage scrub plant community, holding the landscape together during the dormant months.
As we continue to grow our acceptance of and appreciation for climate appropriate California gardens, and embrace the paradigm shift, let us graciously bid adieu to our home’s unsustainable velvet robe.

The industrious clients came to us with dreams of a new garage structure to provide a home for all of their passions. The design came together around a three car garage with room for a micro-brewery, workshop and bicycle storage – all attached to the house via a new three season porch – and a native prairie landscape and sauna structure on the roof.

In order to meld with the clean lines of this contemporary Boulder residence, lights were detailed such that they float each step at night. This hidden lighting detail was the perfect complement to the cascading hardscape.

Artaic - Innovative Mosaic
Artaic worked closely with underwater photographer and digital imaging specialist Jim Hellemn to produce a stunning pool-bottom mosaic for a luxurious vacation home in the Cayman Islands. Inspired by the natural coral reef situated right beside the property, the 60-foot long mosaic, which is made up of thousands of squared 3/8” vitreous glass tiles, offers the homeowners a permanent art installation that immortalizes the underwater ecosystem living right in their backyard.
Hellemn, whose work has appeared in National Geographic and at the American Museum of Natural History, took a “stitched” high-resolution photograph of the coral reef, which was then digitally translated into a mosaic using Artaic’s proprietary Tylist™ software.
“Capturing the essence of coral reefs and marine environments is at the core of my imaging pursuits. Coral reefs are among the most colorful places on the planet, but are nearly impossible to visualize on a large scale without the use of some very special tools,” says Hellemn.
Coral reefs, although now one of the most widely endangered ecosystems in the world, still remain some of the most colorful and beautiful wildlife habitats on Earth. The combination of Hellemn’s photography and the precision of Artaic’s mosaic tile arrangement gives the residence’s owners a realistic and everlasting interpretation of the vibrant reef found beside them to enjoy for years to come.

" The plantings are lush, but there's still a great view to check to see if Mom will be coming out to play soon. I'm a very good dog so my designer didn't have to worry about me digging up anything but she was mindful to choose plants along the edge of paths that could handle a little trampling in case I decided to take a shortcut. The gravel path was created along my normal route so no one had to retrain me. I love that the slate nuggets don't get stuck between my toes and Mom's really happy now that I don't drag mud into the house! ... Bailey the dog.

This photo clearly shows the large sun shelf then steps down into the pool. The young grandchildren love to play here and grandparents lounge chairs are nearby. Grill is to far left and will later be part of an outdoor kitchen under a pavilion. Also notice the benches along the inside edge of the pool. Cool place to sit and watch everyone play. Paths behind the planting beds lead thru the rose and perennial garden as well as to an edible garden.
