i have the old blah standadrd steel core double door, abt 60 wide, 90 high
we cant afford the few thousand dollar door i REALLY want with glass inserts etc, and salvaged older doors are running a few thousand and would likely have to be modified to fit, adding on cost .
i was wondering if anyone has experience with using moudling added (epoxy'd?) on top of a (fiberglass) door to get a richer/heftier look? of course it would have to be a linear/paneled design as moulding is linear....
the door will be painted/laquered over when finished since we are having our interior painted anyway

11 years agoI thought your initial message was about the exterior door. Knocker, & kick place are for outside only. The window above the door and the panels on the door make the door very nice. Not blah at all. The chandelier is too small for the large space, though. If you want to get rid of the blahs buy a larger chandelier with some glitz & gold tones to blend with the door handles. Deep gray walls and a glossy black door is going to cut the light down in these rooms. How about mid gray walls , white trim and a matte (or semi-gloss) black door?

11 years agoI think a high gloss black door will look gaudy. See bathroom photo below. I do not like their use of high-gloss black paint on trim in the bathroom photo. I'm prejudiced, though, high gloss on trim (especially very dark high-gloss trim) reminds me of yucky public bathrooms. High gloss in dark colors doesn't show stains & wipes clean easily. The black door in the hallway photo is I think: semi-gloss. The door gives off a little sheen but retains subtle elegance. Black absorbs light. The high gloss will shine, but not in a nice way, IMO. Karen makes a good point: high gloss shows flaws, too.
