Paint it Black
For Non-Color Riches, Go Dark on a Wall, the Floor — or All Over
Today, I'd be perfectly happy if all my rooms were painted black. It's not that I'm in as foul a mood as Mick when he belted out that famously moody song, it's that these black interiors are really just that good. Perhaps the dark side has been getting a bad rap all this time? Hard to say, but I know for sure these inky spaces have me contemplating a crossover. How about you?
Dark walls, ceiling and jet black floor, and yet this entryway feels anything but ominous. Instead, it's almost like a cozy embrace.
I love white cabinetry, but there's something so unique and, well, flat-out cool about this kitchen. It's simple, but the warm wood floors keep it from feeling stark.
A dark ebony-stained floor imbues your home with black, yet it's subtle enough that no one might even realize you're place is covered in the non-color color.
Black was made for lounge-y areas like this. If there isn't a lot of natural light coming through, a wall or two in a lighter gray or white keeps the space from feeling like a cave.
If the thought of black walls sounds a tad too spooky for your taste, relegate it to furnishings instead.
The dark walls, carpet, and upholstery recede in this room to give the molding and built-ins center stage. Even though the contrast is as polarized as it gets, the small room still feels relaxing and comfortable.
For a bit of a reversal, why not white walls and black built-ins?
Whether it be the deepest chocolate brown (as I suspect it might be here) or real-deal black, a white ceiling, wainscoting and linens work to keep the darkness from overpowering a room.
A wall of black in the bedroom calms the eye and soothes you into a restful state better than any other hue.
I hope Scarface hasn't permanently ruined the mix of black and gold for you. As this classy room proves, they can work together well without letting off a whiff of '80s excess.
Hello in there? Press your face to the monitor and you can just make out the work area of a kitchen at the top of the image and a dining table with banquette below. I love this because it solves the problem of ever having to clean the kitchen or dining areas again — crumbs and spills magically disappear into the black sea around you!
