Turning found objects into art and using space wisely
The underside of this staircase serves as storage for both the kitchen and the powder room on the other side of the stairs. An old timber measurer, and wooden snowshoe provide warm, artistic decoration to the light walls. The mast from a sailboat the client used as a child finds new life being repurposed as a stair railing.

This is one of the hardest working staircases in America. It leads up to a studio over the garage as well as a guest suite over the kitchen. The bookshelf contains the client's cookbook collection and a small television; the cabinet contains glassware and to the left of it (not seen) is another niche that contains a microwave.The stair's handrail is made from a mast from the client's childhood sailboat; they left the rigging on it. That tool over the barware cabinet is an old timber measurer, which serves as sculptural found object, as does the snowshoe hung in the stairwell.

Once your floors have been sanded, they need to be finished. A full discussion of the available finishes could easily fill its own ideabook, but here are a few points of conventional wisdom: An oil finish may be more durable, but you will have to cope with odors and VOCs when it is installed. The glossier a finish, the better it will hold up to traffic. Of course it will also show that traffic much more than a matte finish. Polyurethanes, the most popular floor finish, can't be touched up invisibly, so you have to refinish once the wear gets too bad.
