Cabinets are rift Red Oak, Australian Lacewood, and Wenge, with curly Sycamore. Behind, a custom cast concrete backsplash in green and purple with a customized Allessi fruit bowl. To the right of the bowing curly Sycamore panel below the prep sink are two custom stainless steel shelves for the most used condiments. They also form pulls for the drawers behind them. The end of the cabinet to the left of the sink swings open with the towel bar as the door pull. Cooking area backsplash to the right, next to the stove is glass back-painted green. Purchased by Piperbear in 2012 from the original owners, this 1950s Cape Cod needed a complete stylistic makeover. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was mostly removed, and the kitchen was redone with a new layout, granite countertops and new appliances; the downstairs bathroom was updated with new fixtures and period appropriate black and white hexagon tile. Upstairs, 220 feet of square footage was added by raising the roof and pushing into the dormers, creating a new full bathroom and laundry area.

Most of us like lots of storage in our kitchens, usually resulting in large banks of monotonous cabinets. But by considering the various tasks that take place in the kitchen, their sequence, individual requirements, required storage, and preferred surfaces to perform the tasks, you can get a kitchen that is not only more efficient but also delightful to be in. Here we see different countertop materials according to the tasks to be performed at that area: granite around the prep sink for splash; wood cutting board adjacent to the prep sink; wood counter at the sitting area; granite and glass at the stove; and continuous stainless steel counter/sink at the clean-up sink
