We designed: a new expanded dining patio with a custom pergola to give dappled shade; a nearby water feature burbling sweetly; a sunken lounge surrounded by gardens and trees for privacy; a sweet vine-covered arbor with a swinging bench for morning coffee and afternoon reading. The birds will have a new location for their house/feeder close to habitat and cover- including a Japanese water fountain to bathe in and drink. The sunken lounge will feature a firepit and luxury seating, all under watch of the Garden Buddha featured against a bamboo wall. Design/Photo, Gigi

By removing a small patio, a thin and muddy patch of grass, and by adding two larger patios connected by a transitional grill area, we were able to make the entire backyard comfortable and usable. Feature stones, a drilled boulder fountain, and a plant palette of blue/gray foliage shade plants 'iced the cake' of this tiny backyard.

Location: Cohasset, MA, United States What lies beyond this enchanting archway? The secluded walkway guides visitors through a shady glen of ferns, coral bells, lady’s mantle and hakonechloa and out to a broad landscape reminiscent of Tuscany, which is the place these clients find their inspiration. This island bed has contrasting green hues in the spring, with Euphorbia Shorty, Lavender and Santolina along the edges of the Pea Stone pathway. The purple Smoke Bush bloom beautifully complements the composition. Amy Martin

Homeowner loves native plants and has a back yard design full of them in this North Bay Area garden. A Sentinel Manzanita is a great plant for structure and the red bark is a great contrast to the gray leafed plants nearby. Leaves from a native California Coast Live Oak create an easy mulch tha aids in protecting the health of a nearby oak tree. Cathy Edger, Edger Landscape Design Cathy Edger, Edger Landscape Design
