Poor drainage was an enoromous obstacle we were happy to solve for this SW Portland family. Decorative Mexican Black Pebbles cover standard drain rock that leads to a perforated pipe, gathering storm water run-off and depositing it into a nearby dry stream bed. Photography by: Joe Hollowell

To gain maximum views, the patio was extended significantly from the home. Masonry walls, with Tennessee stone that matches the home, support the edge of the patio.

After moving into a mid-century ranch home on Spokane's South Hill, these homeowners gave the tired landscape a dramatic makeover. The aging asphalt driveway was replaced by precast concrete pavers that coordinate with a new walkway of sandwashed concrete pads. A pared-down front lawn reduces the overall water use of the landscape, while sculptural boulders add character. A small flagstone patio creates a spot to enjoy the outdoors in the courtyard-like area between the house and the towering ponderosa pines. The backyard received a similar update, with a new garden area, water feature, and paver patio anchoring the updated space.

Designed in mid-century modern style, the cedar fence is outfitted with rain pattern, safety glass panels. This allows for privacy and winter lighting into the south side of the homes. The existing concrete walkway had 9" trimmed off its south side to allow placement of the fence on the lot line.

Hey Nice Garden
We installed a 1500 sq. ft. Ipe deck to connect the pool to the house and make the yard feel cohesive. We added a custom steel & cable fence/gate, pool equipment cover, hillside plantings and low- water no mow lawn to complete the look.

Here the studio of the late Karl Benjamin can be seen. The landscape remodel was created in the spirit of Karl's original design inspiration with intersecting planes, modular concrete pads, and lush greenery surrounding his studio. If you look closely, you can still see his original artwork hanging on the wall. Materials used were Mangaris wood for the deck and steps, Carex divulsa for the meadow grass 'lawn', and several strategically placed Japanese Maples.
