Cement countertops pros / cons - Considering cement because we want a light gray counter and there aren't many options, and I love the look of cement. Any notes on cement? »
Twisted Minds Custom Designs Alison, I've attached a link to a FAQ's page regarding concrete countertops. I hope the information helps to aid you in your decision of whether to use concrete in your future plans. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and I would be glad to answer, or contact a local concrete artisan to discuss the many benefits concrete has to offer.
dagwilde Also, is that a garbage shoot beside the small sink? If not, what are the small rectangular things beside the utility sink right at the front left of the photo?
Love the tin ceiling, does it come in copper? - Really like the tin ceiling idea, but would like it better if it added the warmth of copper, maybe even use it ass a back splash behind a stove top? Thanks for any answers. »
Jane Kelly, Designer for Airoom LLC The cabinets are by Crystal and I used "designer white". If you're going to paint your existing cabinets I would suggest investing in a farrow & ball fan deck and matching one of their whites. They have a small amount of colors but they are amazing and all work well together.
nice ceiling decoration..but how to stick the tiles? - It's a norm to put the tiles on the floor, but how to stick them on the ceiling? plus, it's defying gravity of course..i don't think using the method of sticking them on the floor will make it happen just fine on the ceiling as well..could you please explain a bit detail..? thanks.. »
visionaire1 These are pressed tin tiles. They are very light in weight and easy attach to ceilings. Pressed tin has been used for ceilings for hundreds of years.
Jane Kelly, Designer for Airoom LLC They are actually nailed to the ceiling...no need to worry about them falling on your head. check out this link for some installation pics.

Is that the refrigerator over by the patio door? - How does it work having all of the major stations (sink, stove, refrigerator) on one wall rather than in a conventional work triangle? And it seems household traffic would go right through the work area to get to the exterior? I am having a similar problem with my layout and would appreciate any advice. »
Jane Kelly, Designer for Airoom LLC This layout worked well for this client as it created two different work zones. There is a prep sink to the left of the range which means multiple people can work in the space at the same time without bumping into each other.
Jane Kelly, Designer for Airoom LLC That is the Wolf microwave drawer which worked really well when used below the counter. The other island has a warming drawer hidden behind a panel
kidzdoc These look like the "2002" line pendants by a phenomenal glass artist named Alison Berger. You should check out her website (http://www.alisonbergerglassworks.com) - beautiful pieces! Unfortunately, they don't seem to be easy to come by; they are found at Holly Hunt showrooms and a store called Plug in LA. Here is a link to a page from Plug's website...

Custom Home Planning Center oil as a finish coat on a glued together engineered floor does great with spills better than traditional floors whose between slats open and close with temperature. Lower gloss oil is much easier to buff out pet scratches and kids with stones in their shoes. It does take a bit more maintenance, but I never had a problem having the kids put on miss matched socks over their shoes and have a oil the floor skating party.
pamvenn Absolutely. Good for standing a long time, stuff breaks less when dropped, and unless you are really spilling gobs of liquid gunk, somewhat easy to clean and maintain.

stainless Steel color variations - Hello, I was wondering if you can tell me if it would look OK to mix a stainless steel appliance with an EZ clean one? They are not right next to each other. What do you think?
Appreciate your comments. »
Jim's Appliance & JW Kitchens We sell appliances as well as do kitchen designs. We have done many kitchens that have both the GE Clean Steel along with the stainless. As long as you are not doing the two finishes close to each other, I think it looks fine. Most commonly it is the Clean Steel refrigerator and stainless in the other appliances.
Emily Hurley Looks like the designer answered that on another question. Here you go! "The perimeter and island in the foreground are granite "Maroon Cohiba Antiqued" or sometimes its referred to as "Antique Brown Suede". The White countertop on the island in the background is Calcutta Gold Marble."
annievickery how long is this space? i like the idea of two islands but kind of want a breakfast table at the end by the windows, this is the perfect solution for our new space!
Jane Kelly, Designer for Airoom LLC I love working with Sub zero and wolf. They integrate beautifully into the cabinetry and are wonderful projects. LaCornue makes a fabulous range...really expensive but it's a very specific look. I've been using Calcutta gold for a long time and it's still extremely popular. Whites will always be current. Cambria is a quartz product which I've been using a lot lately. They have some beautiful colors (I'm particularly fond of their more solid colors) and its extremely durable. You can see them at www.cambriausa.com

melaniegross They are called "hand scraped" or "hand honed". You can buy them at most big box home stores. Bruce hardwoods has several colors of this. I would like to add this note though. They are very hard to keep clean. You see every little thing on them especially when they are this dark. I love the look of them in my house but I have 2 dogs and cleaning the paw prints never ends. Expect to pay about $8 per sq. ft. installed or more.
Beautiful kitchen! - Could I add a white subway tile backsplash? There are so many whites to select from. Any suggestions if you think this is a good way to go?
Also, what finish are the pulls? »
2. Traditional tin tile and white. This unique tin-lined ceiling caught the eye of users who wanted a traditional twist in their kitchen. The mix of more contemporary fixtures and classic tin tiles may have been the initial draw, but the unique appliance layout and double island are just as inspiring.
