The bay window opens the kitchen to the back patio, and floods the space with natural light. Because the home is on a historical block, the exterior changes — including this window — had to be approved by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. So I realize that this isn't necessarily a conservatory or a greenhouse, but there's no denying that it still looks just as inviting. I like this concept because it seems obtainable for many homeowners. The floor-to-ceiling bay window go much further than a common picture window in terms of aesthetic beauty, and I'm guessing that most of us have an area where we could accomplish something similar.

If you have the option to replace, adding modern windows to a historic home can be a nice way to bring the modern aesthetic in. This bumped-out window was added to a West Philadelphia kitchen by Hanson General Contracting for a more contemporary look and a little extra space.

Another wall of paned glass. The view doesn't have to be spectacular for a wall like this to make sense. The light and space and feeling of openness are enough to earn the wall's keep. And don't you love how the clear acrylic chairs play off the glass?
