New Home Owner--Painting Kitchen Cabinets? - I see that you used Benjamin Moore "Decorators White" in semi gloss. I just purchased a house that has a brand new cherry wood kitchen. I have had my heart set on white cabinets. What color were these cabinets before you painted them? Can I paint my cherry wood kitchen cabinets and have the same result?? »
Stoneshop Granite doesn't really have much of an issue with scratching, whether it has a honed or polished finish. You care for both finishes the same way. Clean it only with your granite cleaner and seal the countertops approximately once a year. Black granite is very hard, so it's practically indestructible.
Stunning work, Garrison Hullinger Interior Design! That ceiling is gorgeous!

Seam visible or not in the granite. - With such a large island, were you able to find a piece of granite to fit the whole island or did you need 2 pieces? If you used 2 pieces is the seam very visible? »
Just a thank you - I just wanted to say that I am in the final stages of a kitchen remodel and I have returned to this photo/house again and again. It is my favorite of all homes I have used as my inspiration. I wanted to say that I am so impressed with your kindness and willingness to answer each and every question people ask of you. Your responses are so respectful and helpful. Thank you for sharing your work and your time. It is so appreciated. »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. So exciting about your remodel Aubrey. Hope it all goes well and you have a wonderful space to enjoy when you're done. Thanks for your kind words about sharing our expertise and portfolio. Sometimes we don't have all the answers but we to help and houzz is such a great place to share.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Granite with all finishes is still susceptible of taking on stains (e.g. oils, etc)...you should speak with your fabricator to ensure you are getting the right granite and finish for your space.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Finally found some old files that have the original floor plan of the house before we moved around some pieces in the kitchen.
Fireplace help - Building a home with open concept floor plan. I absolutely love your kitchen!! If this kitchen were open to the living room what type of fireplace would you suggest? I was thinking of painted brick but not sure??
Thanks so much »
chrisallenhogs Thanks so much for your help! Do you think I could use a 3x6 white ceramic tile instead of porcelain and obtain the same look?? Also, did you use a marble trim piece to transition to the smaller tiles?? Thanks again. I really appreciate your feedback.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Sorry, the notices don't seem to be coming to us when there is a second comment or question. Yes, I think you could pull off the look with a 3x6 tile. And we used a matching liner piece.
Where did you get your blinds and what is the color/name of them? - Your kitchen is everything I wish mine could be. I tried copying the look on a budget. It will never compare to yours. »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Thanks for the great compliment...so wonderful that you took inspiration from this project. We do not have the specifics on the woven wood shades from Budget Blinds.
amybturner Unfortunately, the green tag closest to the countertop says mini Calcutta marble tile. It looks like honed granite to me but is possibly my untrained eye?
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. This photo has many, many green tags, maybe the size of your screen is punching them together. Here is the info from the green tag on the front corner of the island. Cambrian Black Granite

Beautiful space! How much counter space is there to the right of the prep sink? It looks like it's only a few - It looks like it's only a few inches, perhaps 3" or 4" to edge of counter. I'm planning on an island with the sink to one side (like this one).
Prep sink is 17" x 17 " (exterior size) & needs at least a 21" cabinet. Should I use a 24" cabinet instead because that would leave about 4" to the edge of the counter? How much space should there to the edge of the counter? Thanks! »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. I think you're right, there is only about 3" from front of counter to sink and then 4" or 5" from side to corner.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Sorry for the delay, we had to go back into the archives of 2009 to find the dimensions on this room. The space is 17'9" x 19'3"
ajland Thanks Surface Brokers, I'm just learning about cabinet height and trying to make my unfortunate 8' ceiling look a little more custom in my kitchen. I wish I had gone 9' or 10', but sadly didnt even think about ceiling height when I bought my house.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Here are some images that were produced in laying out the kitchen box beams and then also during the process of building out the beams. They do not provide specific dimensions.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. I would do a 3" to 4" crown so it feels like it has some substance. It might actually give the room some visual height.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Thanks, look for the small green tags on the photo while browsing. On your ipad or mobile device you can click on the tag if using a computer you can click on the tag with your mouse.

Hinges - Hi! This is my inspiration photo and my remodel has just begun. I just got in the cabinets in decorator's white (love) and the cambrian black granite antiqued (again, love). I also have them as inset with concealed hinges. My question is that for the few glass doors that I have, you can see the hinges at an angle - is that the same for the glass doors in the picture? I'm sure once I put things in they will be less noticeable but I just wanted to be sure I didn't order something wrong. Are your hinges visible from an angle on your glass doors? Thanks so much for creating such a beautiful kitchen!! »
Like the composition. It's not overloaded with high wall cupborads like some kitchens I saw there on the site. - Like the composition. It's not overloaded with high wall cupborads like some kitchens I saw there on the site. I saw not them all but I wonder why in all af them (classical, neoclassical, close to classical designed) are always used "modern designed", strictly square formed appliances? I don't even talk about the colour of ovens, hobs and so on (there's always a colour of stainless steel or chrome) - just about the form for the beginning.
In other words why "classical formed" appliances are not in use? Maybe I saw too little? »
oleole Yes, I meant the same type of form or/and colour variations (not just stainless) as you've presented on the picture.
Thanks, maybe I really saw too little images on the site.
Can I ask what is the producer of the oven (on the right)? For Europe it's Smeg, Ilve - and Restart as the higher level of Ilve - something like that. The oven looks almost like Restart)
oleole Oh, sorry. I have read the comments for those kitchen. It's La Cornue. I thought the range was made by an American producer and I don't know the name.)
Subway tiles - Thank you for your quick reply! What about the subway tiles? There are so many varieties: hand glazed, crackle finish, etc. what was used in this kitchen? Thanks in advance! »

kitchen island help - regarding the island that is near the table.....does that have an overhang on the other side for bar stools? i have a long galley kitchen with a family room at the end of it. i was thinking of doing as this article suggests, buy 2 24" cabinets, side by side so the cabinets can be accessed from the kitchen and bar stools on the other side????? any ideas? »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. This is exactly the use of this eating island...I jokingly call it the feeding island...great place for the kids, keeping them close but yet out of the way. Good luck with your remodel.
villagepeople thanks for your reply. i am working myself in to a tizzy over this place!!!!!!!! if only my husband was handy! love your design - i'll keep wishing!
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. You can find this answer if you move your mouse over the photo and see the small green tags on the photo. Also if you read through the comments you'll see more details on this same question.
"Modern" edge on granite countertops? - Hi there - these countertops are PERFECT. Is that a "modern" edge on the granite or something else? We are deciding between "bullnose" and modern" edge for our granite. Thanks! »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. On the photo you will see small green tags, there is a tag that answers your question. Good luck with the house build!
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Click on the different green tags to see the highlighted pieces. The tag near the door to the living has the paint color for the walls. Woodlawn Blue HC-147 by Benjamin Moore
Floor Plans - Hi, thank you for the other photo of the kitchen. I was wondering where this home was and also if there are floor plans for it that are available?
Thank you! »
kim thomas sorry didn't mean to insult it, the kitchen is so very like it must be a case of brilliant minds thinkiing alike. Your kitchen is so very beautiful that I may well copy it for my house in England
Window treatments - I love the shades on the windows and how they let a lot of light in! Can you please tell me where to get them? They look golden which I love against the cool blue wall color ... great combination! »
Do you have another photo of a different view of this kitchen? - Hi, I wondering what the other parts of this room look like? Do you have other pics of this kitchen from different angles so we can see the rest of the room design? Thanks! »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. I am attaching the only other photo of kitchen cabinets. This photo is of the prep sink that is to the right (out of this shot).
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Seems like different regions have different names for the stone finishes. If you search for antique finish on granite you might find close up photos that you can then compare to the 'leathered' finish and that might answer your question. Good luck.
Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design The charm of this space, to me, is having all that light flooding in through the big windows. Add in white cabinets and dark countertops, interesting light fixtures, and it's a winner. Just decrease the scale of things and it can be yours. Take the parts that caught your eye and go for it, but on a smaller scale.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Each person is drawn to different components of the room. Take a look at this side area of the same kitchen and made it will help you in starting the process of shrinking this space down to a size you can have in your own home.
Can someone explain what "antiquing finish applied" means on the granite? - I am very new to the granite world, out of every kitchen I've seen on Houzz these countertops are my absolute favorite! I looked at absolute black counters yesterday at the importer and liked but whatever is done here has me head over heels. any explaination or pointing to where I can get more info would be so appreciated. Thank you. »
Love everything about this kitchen and all your generous responses to the questions asked. - On the wood floors you previously mention that they are varying sizes. Could you elaborate on that. What are the sizes? I am building a new home how to I achieve this look and color? Is is more costly? »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Thanks for your comments, this award winning home is a wonderful pride for the family living in it as well. We used 5" and 7" width oak flooring throughout the home. As for obtaining a dark stain on the oak floors like this home it is best to work with your contractor, whether selecting a prefinish product or a stain in place (like this project). There are a lot of steps to achieve this look and best discussed with a professional in your regional area...or you could end up like this family:

Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. This question was already asked by another member and answered by us, please review the other questions. Thanks
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. I am not aware of it being in a movie. We did take some inspiration from the movie Somethings Gotta Give for the kitchen finishes.
Brilliant! Lighting & Design Proper scale, proportion, and relationships is about much more than just the quantity of lights and size of the island.
Please consider the various ways the island will be used and the quality of light they require, ceiling height, overall room size, whether or not the room is open to other spaces, where else can the lights / island be seen from, relationship to other furniture / cabinetry / lighting in the space, etc. before making a decision.
IMO, just on the facts presented here so far, I'd go with 3 @ 14".
Wall color choice - I like the color chosen for the walls in this kitchen. I have used an antique linen 1/2 strength for my kitchen walls from pitt p. paint and would like to use a blue/gray for the rest of the house similar to that used here in the kitchen. Do you have any suggestions please? Thank you! »
aujcar I'm also interested in knowing the approximate dimensions of this island as I would like to put a good size sink and dishwasher on the shorter width of our planned island. Thanks!
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. We used Benjamin Moore's Decorators White on the cabinets and trim throughout most of the home. Navajo White OC-95 was used in the master suite of this same home.
Hello, I am in love with this kitchen. It's so refreshing. Can you advise where the cabinet hardware is from/manufacturer's name? Is it oil bronzed pulls or black? thanks! »
galleykitchen Hi. What do you mean by "took crown of the cabinets to 7'. I'm getting ready to order Dynasty by Omega cabinets and can't decide between (wall cabinet)1- 39"L x 36"H or 2- 27"butt door &13" x 36"H for a three door look. Shaker syle door with 2" crown. I have a galley kitchen. 36" wolf hood will be next to this wall cabinet. I will be removing soffit and after placement of 36"Height cabinets I will have about 21" to 22" (not 18") from granite to under wall cabinet (the hubby wants this space for a tall Vitamix blender about 20.5" ) Please tell me if this will look nice. I welcome all your suggestions. Thank you in advance. This is so stressful.
galleykitchen I forgot to mention. I have 120" wall space. What would look better...two door or (two separate cabinets 27"&13") three door look? Thanks again.
R. B. Hi Letitia! I took your advice and went for it. We had custom built our drawer microwave in the island. It looks and works great. We bought the Sharp brand, as it handle matched our refrigerator. It is very easy to clean. The open/close button works really well. My cup of coffee spills only if I manually open the drawer. That is typically when I am trying to rush and being impatient.
Letitia Holloway I am so glad you like it. If you need anything else, you can always e-mail me. I will help when I can. I hear from people all over the world and I am good w any new construction advice as well. Letitia@myersdesign.net
Tonieann Not only do I like you style, I like your wit too... We live in the South of France and it is rather rural. Hence, the constant struggle to find classic, timeless yet beautifully constructed kitchens.
Hi Garrison, I was wondering if these are all custom cabinets or not? If not, what brand and style are they? I've been looking at photos of kitchens for ideas for a month and your design is my favorite. Thanks for posting.
Texie »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Thanks so much Texie...so glad I got the 'love' tag!
Yes these are custom built for the client. We kept things really clean looking in the home. We had the cabinet shop make the doors for an inset look. We also opted to not have mullions on the cabinet doors since the transoms in the doorways would be enough visual appeal. Hope that helps!
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Sorry, I never did actually answer your question. I would have made it into more of an L-shaped island so the kid's chairs could be lined up like an old soda fountain shop.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. The countertops are cambrian black granite...we then had an antiquing finish applied to the granite. Some of the fabrication shops call it 'leathering' as well. Check out this site for an explanation of leather granite finish: http://www.percocomarble.com/finishes.php
cheryl_foster Funny, I was just looking at this kitchen. Please tell me about the hardwood floor. Does your client like the leathered finish on the granite...any feedback? I'm going to get my granite for my island leathered as well and I'm curious about what it's like to live with.
Rebekah Zaveloff It's a bit far away so hard to tell, but it looks like a white 3x6 subway tile and a minibrick mosaic behind the range with a border around that.
darley I love the wall colors in this kitchen! Does Woodlawn Blue present more blue than green when applied? In this picture it looks like the most fabulous blue but the sample is more green.
annieknight Hi, i love the color of the wood floors. i am in the process of selection a stain color. Can you help me with the brand of stain and color? Thank you
Can you please advise on the color of the cabinets? I've been advised that a soft white is easier on the eyes, but it doesn't go with any of the marble slabs I like as it looks yellow. An arctic white matches, but I'm concerned it may look too stark and bright. I love this kitchen and the cabinets look pretty much like the arctic white to me. Thanks! »
Rebekah Zaveloff I use Benjamin Moore's White Dove quite a bit when I'm looking for a softer white. Farrow and Ball has a color called Wimborne White as well.
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. We used Benjamin Moore's Decorators White on the cabinets and trim...I love Navajo White OC-95 for a softer look.
size of eating island? - Love the double island set up!
I see the dimensions of the large island in the floor plan- 6x6.5.
What are the dimensions of the second smaller island? »
3. Soft sheen instead of super shine. Leathered, honed or flamed granite offers a low sheen, and the texture feels good under your hands. These finishes are outpacing highly polished surfaces in popularity.
6. Do you need a designer? It depends. Islands are often the main gathering and work spot in the kitchen, so a lot of thought goes into them. "Anyone with a good sense of proportion and who takes care in planning for all the proposed uses can figure this out," says Ahmann. "But that's not everyone. A designer or architect can help in working this out, especially when related to more than just a working kitchen." Kitchen Workbook: How to Remodel Your Kitchen
Maintenance: Limit routine care to a soft cloth and warm water or cleansers made specifically for granite. You'll want to seal your slab every year or two with an impregnating water-based sealer made for granite.Special considerations: You might have heard questions about radon content in granite. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that there is little or no health threat from granite counters, due to their relatively low radon content. You can read more here.More: 10 Great Alternatives to Granite Kitchen Counters
I like the darker countertops. So many of these are white cabinets, white counter, white backsplash, light floor. Looks sterile. The dark counter helps make it not look sterile
this idea could work for our kitchen/stove along wall backing onto dining wall/small island between kitchen and living room space with square island in middle of kitchen
