djbarnett can you tell me the tile you used around the fireplace? we have a big brick fireplace that extends up to cathedral ceiling. We want to box in the lower 9-10 feet of it with mantle, etc but would also like to tile the fireplace surround as you have it here. We considered bookcases on either side but decided it exceeded our skill level :) is there a "formula" for how much tile should exist on the side vertical pieces versus the horizontal line above the fireplace opening? And is any of that determined by the overall scale of the mantle?
Love the subway stone used on the fireplace. What is it? - We are doing a remodel of a small home on our horse ranch. I've selected Robert Andrews' "Tilos" (pale yellow) pillowed 3x6 limestone tiles for the kitchen backsplash and Jerusalem Gold tumbled limestone in 8x8 for the floor of the utility room off the kitchen. All other floors will be a light-colored Hevea wood by Provenza called Chambord. I want to tie in the fireplace stone to the kitchen area since the family room is open to the kitchen. Should I use the Tilos pillowed tile or the tumbled Jerselum Gold. Both are available in subway sizes and larger. Thanks! »
