Amber Freda Garden Design
Check out the spectacular views on this Brooklyn rooftop garden! Our design included a total makeover of a previously barren space, including replacing the dingy looking concrete pavers with ipe wood deck tiles. We also designed a custom L-shaped ipe bench with seats that lift up for storage and planters filled with soft grasses built into the back of the bench. The lush looking plantings in this garden are in a mix of ipe and fiberglass pots and include Tardiva hydrangeas, white multi-stem birch trees, Mexican feather grasses, boxwoods, angelonia, purple coneflower, and a weeping redbud tree. The planters are illuminated with LED low-voltage up-lights for a dramatic nighttime effect.

Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS)
For this contemporary, Japanese-style residence sitting high on a hill in southern Vermont, JMMDS created a simple, clean-lined design using stone pavers, retaining walls, and geometric beds to define the area around the house.
The house is composed of two long offset barn buildings with eaves that are joined in the middle around an exterior stone courtyard. JMMDS’s design holds up the steep surrounding slopes with a long stone retaining wall bordering a rectangular quartzite terrace with a beautiful view out to the surrounding landscape. The wall encloses a level grass shelf around the house; outside the wall, less manicured turf drops away quickly down the slope.
Ledges on the hillside that parallels the house are exposed as an asset. On the entry side of the house, JMMDS designed a wall that retains the slope between garage and house, accessed by a set of broad stone steps and linear pavers that take a visitor straight to the front door. Plantings in geometric beds surround more quartzite pavers that form a terrace for the guest wing of the house. The drip space under the eaves is filled with black washed river stone.

Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
This contemporary landscape was completely transformed with bluestone patios, pathways and stairways, horizontal redwood fencing, stucco covered retaining walls, drought-tolerant trees and other plantings along with low-voltage lighting and other accents. An olive tree surrounded by gravel and boulders and other low water plants and succulents provide a welcome entrance area. Plants include Blue chalk sticks, Echeveria elegans, Kangaroo Paw and Leucadendron. Updates to the home's exterior will be completed Fall of 2016. Complete landscape renovation of rear yard. The property is a duplex that shared a single backyard. After extensive excavation, retaining walls and new flatwork each unit had the own private space for entertaining.
Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS)
The landscape design for this property in an established New York City suburb marries stately elegance with relaxed outdoor living. The greatest challenge of the site was a considerable grade change over a small area (a third of an acre). We replaced overgrown shrubs and crumbling stonework with a clean hardscape design that clearly defines the flow around the property. A long play lawn in front is linked to a sideyard patio space and natural-gas campfire with broad bluestone block steps. A cozy dining terrace behind the house is hugged by a retaining wall that showcases friendly flowering plants and edibles. Set into the terrace wall is a custom water feature that brings sound and movement to the seating area. Exposed ledge in the backyard provides a fun playspace for adventurous kids, with a rope bridge leading to a playhouse.
