The Workshops of David T. Smith
This Cottage style kitchen was designed for a clapboard-sided, 1890’s Kentucky cottage and is located in a small town near Lexington, Kentucky. The owners completely restored the house and wanted a kitchen that was clean and simple, with a period feel to blend with the house.
For this style kitchen, they chose cabinets with simple, flat panel doors, flush drawers, curved Shaker feet, and Shaker 45 degree crown molding. The sink cabinet has 1890’s-style beaded panel doors, ball feet, and contains a Kohler sink.
The finish is brushed linen white on the main cabinets and brushed moss green on the island. The counter tops are ¾’’ and 1¼’’ curly maple with brown stain and a mineral oil finish. The hardware is blackened Shaker wooden knobs.

In the design stages many details were incorporated in this classic kitchen to give it dimension since the surround cabinets, counters and backsplash were white. Polished nickel plumbing, hardware and custom grilles on feature cabinets along with the island pendants add shine, while finer details such as inset doors, furniture kicks on non-working areas and lofty crown details add a layering effect in the millwork. In the living room, a massive black Venetian glass chandelier suspends dramatically from a 12-foot tray ceiling, offset by detailed triple-crown molding. Custom wall molding adds texture to charcoal gray walls.
Black granite frames the ventless fireplace, where black fire glass is used to conceal the gas plumbing lines.
A flat screen television and integrated speakers are among several devices comprising a home automation system that wirelessly controls technology by a wall-mounted iPad or any smartphone.
A long modular sofa with custom silk pillows anchors the living room seating arrangement, which is flanked by low-profile lounge chairs and a heavy slatted metal coffee table atop a large cowhide rug.
Metal nesting tables and porcelain garden stools quickly double as extra seating.
Louisiana artist Joseph “Jojo” Jilbert was commissioned to create a custom sculpture for the living room. Towering at more than eight feet, “Nebulas 1” is forged from fire in his signature style using reclaimed metal objects. The welded creation is modeled after the famed Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, where light and heat from young stars create columns that are trillions of miles long. The sculpture is burnished to a deep patina and engraved with intricate scrollwork. Large Fiddle Leaf Fig ficuses bring color and texture to the opposing corner, offering a natural foil to the spiny details of the artwork.

This relationship between partners is much more than a friendship. Edward and Stephen Rudloff are brothers who have renovated and built custom homes together paying close attention to detail. They are carpenters by trade and understand concept and execution. CliqStudios
CliqStudios Painted White Dayton doors were used in this beautiful white and black kitchen. With their designer, the owners of this home installed a wine rack above the refrigerator and created a stack of moldings on the upper cabinets to add height to their space. The wall-to-wall white subway tile pairs nicely with the large black floor tile. The range and apron sink with the stainless pull-down faucet were the perfect finishing touches.
The Interior Edge
This project was a complete renovation. It was the first project a newlywed couple did together. In one of the first meetings we all agreed we loved the Osborne and Little striped polka dot fabric (pillow on the chairs and sofa). The room grew from there. A main objective was to enhance the view of Central Park all the way to the Palisades. We kept the walls light and the upholstery monochromatic, except for a dash of off white in the Hugues Chevalier (Ying Armchair). The area rug is large and almost square we had it made by Royce wool carpets. Joanne and Bill Riley custom designed it. The background was kept the blue of the upholstery further grounding the space yet keeping it quiet enough with only red and gold accents (there are actually 9 colors in the rug, but they are the same hues as the 3 main colors) The wood of the dining area adds a solid feel. (Table and chairs by Stanley furniture) Along the long wall is a 20' built-in with a Costa Smerelda granite counter top, as. storage space is at a premium in NYC. There is enough room for a small bar area on the left, dining area storage in the middle and to the far right. Also, in the middle is a 50" TV that comes up out of the granite and audio equipment. Above the built-in are wall to wall mirrors with glass shelves hanging from them. This keeps an open and spacious feel. The accessories keep it welcoming. The wall sconces (also on the mirrors) are by Currey and Co. The large crown molding and the high gloss ceiling add to the subtle drama. The small custom wood cabinet is made of Claro Walnut with ebonized Ash legs and handles by Hubel Handcrafted. It sits between the window and the door keeping you centered in the space. All in all an easy space to enjoy!
