Is there a "rule" regarding size of tile for kitchen backsplash?

My kitchen has saltillo tile floor and I'm hoping to use porcelain tile left over from my bathroom remodel to use as kitchen backsplash. Some of those tiles are 12x24 and a few are 24x24. I I have enough square footage to cover whole wall to the ceiling

Contractor says it will be expensive to cut the tiles to standard subway and he thinks that 12x24 is too large for a kitchen backsplash. What do you think?

I'm almost sure counters will be scratched black absolute granite or soapstone. Appliances are ss and I'm flexible regarding cabinet color. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I've seen large format tile used as backsplashes, but they read as solid surface when really big (24"x24") instead of tile. It really depends on the look you're going for. 6x12 may be a good alternative as you'd still get the tile look (3 stacks for between counter and upper cabs) and have minimal cutting. Good luck!

I was thinking of using some of our floor tile to do a backsplash until my husband pointed out that each cut tile has a unfinished edge for lack of a better word. That ended that idea.
