Is could use some brightening! Either direction would work. Paint the cabinets off white. It's a lot of work, can be quit expensive and has to be done right, however. If you lighten the floor, as well, say natural color hardwoods, then you could leave the island dark. The light fixtures over the island are awesome and would show up beautifully if your cabinets where off white. OR, lighten the counter top, backsplash and floor. It's hard to say which option would be most cost effective, most likely painting the cabinets is the least expensive route.
