Salix integra

Hi, I've just bought my first tree (a salix integra). I know that this particular willow is harder to tame than others but I need to know how to thicken the trunk up. I read somewhere than a bit of wire around the base of the trunk will thicken it up. Is this true?

Thanks

I talked to John. He said to plant it in the ground until the trunk is the correct size.
