runningtrails - you mention on your wild mushroom post that you sell a few seedling preparations for shaggy manes. I didn't find the info. listed anywhere.

Also, do you think shaggy manes would grow in MS. I am preparing a bed this year for Morels and plan to buy a kit to try to grow some.

It might be too warm down there for shaggy manes and morels. I don't know. I know that morels needs a deep freeze in the winter.

It grows directly in the soil, not in wood. Near a compost pile is a good place to seed it. The seed medium is liquid and you just pour it on the loose soil, not on grass.

Do they grow naturallly down there? It's worth a try. Just don't drink alcohol with them. Some varieties of shaggy manes contain a chemical that prevents your body from synthesizing alcohol. You'll get symptoms of mild alcohol poisoning that will pass in a few hours. I don't drink, so it's not a problem for me.

Morels do actually grow in MS. There are pictures posted on the MS Wildlife Forum of ones found this year. I will do some research about the shaggy manes.

Thanks for your responses, I don't computer on the weekend. I'm the only computer geek in the world who doesn't own a home PC. Too much other stuff to do and working on one 8 hours a day is enough for me during the week.

What morels really need is a big temperature swing from day to night.

I'm hoping to find some morels in the spring, next year. I have a few places in mind to go hunting.

Go hunting for morels anywhere there has been a forest fire the summer before (or up to 3 years prior). That is where the pro's will be picking.
(yes, I mean professional wild mushroom pickers)

I am currently in my 12th year buying wild mushrooms for a company in Vancouver. I went into a burn once to buy morels, it was interesting but I have kids now and prefer to stay in my own town. We are buying Matsutake right now, as well as Yellow chanterelle, blue chanterelle, cauliflower mushroom, yellowfeet, and hedgehogs. Season is almost done though, as there is snow in the forcast for next week. YIKES!

That's great advice, about the burned areas. I had read that somewhere before and had forgotten about it. I will give it some thought over the winter.
