I put in cheap IKEA butcher block counter by my sink and I wouldn't do it again. You can't let water sit on it and you can't sit wet pans on the surface and leave them for hours. If you have kids or visitors, nagging them or cleaning up after them gets old quick. I will end up replacing the section around my sink, probably with Corian.

I do like the butcherblock in the food prep area of the kitchen, just not close to the sink For me, the big advantage of butcherblock or Corian over granite is I can cut it to size and fit it myself. Plus, the material is cheap
