Something has eaten a large area of lawn, cutting the grass off at ground level. The area is under a filbert/hazelnut tree, and lots of nuts have fallen on the grass and have been eaten by ?squirrels. It has been a very dry summer.

There are a number of ~1/2 inch holes in the area which were easily seen when the dead grass had been removed. Overnight it was easy to see a large number tracks (about the width of the hole) connecting the holes.

Is this from grubs? When digging up the soil around the holes I was unable to find any, but I canÂt think of anything else which could do this much damage.

I can send photographs of the holes and the tracks if anybody is interested in seeing them.
