Second injured goldfish, different problem

I've noticed that another goldfish looked odd.. different problem. Looks like a chunk of flesh is missing right by

its gill. 'Sharkie', a junior goldfish, was born in my pond in 2006.

The spot looks like its healing, or could it just be the effect of the cold water? I suppose that now that the

water is warming up, fungus or disease could set in. So I've added a bit of salt to the pond (to 0.05%) and added

a dose of MelaFix. Should I salt up to 0.1%?

I guess this could have been caused by predator perhaps before the winter freeze?

I would not up the salt or add melafix (for the record...I would not add melafix under ANY circumstances because it can do more harm than good). Whatever caused it, it appears to be healing up. No telling what happened to it. Are you sure it wasn't born that way? Gill deformities are really common in little fish.

I'm pretty sure it didn't look like that last year. It did have more black on it, so its possible that it just wasn't as noticable if it was really there. I checked all my pond pictures from last year (lots), but I don't have any good close ups of this one from the same side.
