over two inches of steering wheel play

My Craftsman 917.271140, 16.5 hp, 42" lawn tractor is great. Over nine years old, it always starts w/o problem. But there is at least two inches of steering wheel play (at rest), and when I am full speeding down the road, it is a little dicey.

I am convinced that correcting the excessive play can be a do-it-yourself project. Would anyone out there who has done this reply with a summary of parts they purchased and steps they did to get this done, or is this something that Sears or an independent shop should do? I have above average skills vis a vis tractor mechanics (I have removed and replaced a broken mandrell. Thanks...
