replacing belts on Craftsman 46" mower

Mine is a 18.5 Kohler Craftsman 46" lawn tractor. I am pretty well familiar with most of the maintenance procedures with the mower. It has been a great machine but I recently decided to replace the belts for the first time. I have the correct belts but the deck belts are giving me problems. How do I take the tension off the strong spring that holds the tension pulley tight so as to put the new belt on the pulley?

your owners manual should give detailed instructions for such. If you don't have manual, get your xxx.xxxxxxx technical model # off the machine ID label, go to sear parts and d/l a free manual.

It is easier most times to simply leave the spring on and roll the belt over a spindle pulley that has good access. The model number from below the seat may be helpful if more guidance is wanted.
