Do white fireplaces get soot covered?

After painting a fireplace white do they covered in soot from having fires? My husband likes to have fires at least once a week in the colder months.
Our fireplace was painted a weird color and the only way I can think of fixing it is to paint it white - but I'm scared of the soot ???

If the FP is drawing properly, I can't see where it would be a problem.
