Dora Amateis is a good bet.

Thanks. If it is Dora Amateis, it is nice because it flowers quite nicely and is fragrant, but long-term it is not good news. I wanted something reliably hardy in my zone, and it seems that I will need to indefinitely baby it in winter :)

It definitely does look like Dora Amateis - the hairs on the leaves in the first picture are quite indicative.
I wouldn't worry too much about hardiness in your zone. Dora has survived at least -12 to -15 here. It does benefit greatly from wind protection in the winter, either by a protected site or barrier of some kind. Without such protection the leaves tend to look pretty bedraggled in the spring. I've also found it too be more susceptible than most varieties to lacebug damage.

Thanks. I googled lacebug damage and I have never seen anything like that on any of my rhododendrons. But..I have seen it on my mountain laurel which dropped most of its leaves and actually died after. Can it be terminal?
We suffered from a particularly long and cold winter then, and the mountain laurel dropped many leaves. It was its first winter, and I thought it was the cold that killed it, but it must have been a combination of factors, lacebugs included.
