Your light watering is good right after planting when the roots are getting established. After that you need a heavy watering about once per week. If the plants wilt in the heat of the day, that is normal. If they are wilted in the morning then they are way to dry. They need a moist well-drained acid soil. I would not fertilize until next year. Thanks Rhodyman. I have soil test kits from my county extension office, but I think I'll wait because it appears that the nursery may have fertilized when they planted. I know my soil is clay, when dry it's like concrete. I'll keep up with light watering for now each day.

You are better off watering deeper and less often. You need to harden the plants off. The soil needs to dry out some between waterings to prevent root rot. If you have a planting in clay soil without a raised bed, you may be in for trouble. Before planting the nursery should have checked for drainage. To do this, dig a hole about twice as deep as the pot or root ball and fill it with water. If the hole drains within a few hours you have good drainage. If the water is still standing 12 hours later, check the drainage in your yard, you may have to take corrective actions and probably use a raised bed. Turn the soil well and dig a hole twice as wide as it is deep. Add plenty of organic material, remove the plant from its container and loosen the root ball. Set the root ball into your prepared hole (making sure the top 1-2 inches of the ball is above the soil level), pull in your humus/organic soil around the plant, pack firmly and cover with mulch.
