Yes it does. You plant a single clove and get a garlic.
But it has to winer, I thing. Go ahead, separate the cloves and
plant them. You might not get big bulbs but you can use the green.

NOTE: plant such that tha tip is almost poking out.

I think it will grow. After you plant it, the clove will root and the green shoot will continue to grow. This summer it should grow to about 2.5'to 3' tall. It will begin to brown in late summer and you can pull it at that time. Garlic is very low maintenance and is one of the most rewarding plants I grow. I love it. At harvest we give away some to our nearest and dearest friends and family but, for the most part, we regard it as valuable as gold.

I have a red onion that I bought less than a week ago, but is already pushing green shoots out of the top. I'd LOVE to plant this but I'd also like to use the onion. Can I lop off the top and plant just that? I'm sure there is a better thread here about this. Thanks!

vettin: Try planting it and harvesting it when it's the size of a green onion. "Green garlic" is very tasty. Can be used just like a green onion only with a garlic flavor.

rmontcal: If you plant that onion, since it already has made a bulb, it will only go to seed.
