Holly berries are black????

I have a holly tree (might be English holly) that had a great "crop" of red berries on it at this time last year- the first year I owned the house. The tree is mature, about 16' tall.

This year most of the berries are black - they look moldy or rotted. Any idea what might have caused this?

I'm in San Francisco. We've had no rain except for a wet storm over Halloween weekend. We do get some fog with condensation but in general it's as dry or dryer this year than last. Other than the berries the tree looks healthy.

It may not be a holly. do you have pictures?

When any berries on trees/shrubs of any type don't get enough water during their formative stage, they'll shrivel up and turn black. We usually get enough rain in the spring to make my blueberries plump, but if we have a dry spring, I water my blueberry bushes to ensure the crop. 'Sounds like this is what happened to your holly berries - water next time! :)
