Camellias that will flower profusely in full shade

In an earlier post I asked about the most floriferous camellias but failed to mention that I am replacing a cam in a location that is in virtual shade. It is under an eave, facing north ands gets maybe 1 hour of very early sun? I'm hoping to compensate for the lack of light by planting a camellia that flowers so much that even in full shade, it puts on a show. Anyone have any suggestions?

The sasanqua 'Mine No Yuki' will do fine in full shade and still bloom heavily, and will lend itself to espalier. I have several, maybe 9-10, in deep shade under a thick tree canopy.

Last week I called Nuccio's and asked for recommendations for camellias that would do well in full shade. They recommended the following: Buttermint, Nuccio's Pearl, Nuccio's Gem, Shiro Chan and I think Pearl Maxwell was mentioned as well. They discouraged me from Sasanquas.

I believe the tag on Chandler Elegans at my local nusersery said it did well in full shade. On Monroiva's site the beautiful Bella Rosa (I saw this one at my nursery and ws taken with it) had contradictory information listed. The catalog description states full or part shade; under growing conditions it reads full to part sun. Mine No Yuki's description stated "full sun or shade." On the Monrovia site, several of the cams that Nuccio's had recommended to me said 'filtered shade' rather than full shade.

It's hard (not having real world experience growing camellias) to know what might work out best in my low-light situation. Forrest Al, I am leaning towards your suggestion because of your great success with White Doves even though our climates may differ. Do you do anything special with your plants to get the great results you describe? Thank again for your suggestions and feedback.

So many great ideas already, but having worked on these types of slopes in Seattle, the first thing that the front elevation needs is a better connection to the sidewalk through an improved entry sequence. This approach could be to rework the existing rockery and insert a new stairway, handrails, and landings that will make a better experience reaching the front door. The style of that sequence could be contemporary or traditional, but regardless of the style is should be improved. The landscaping is overgrown and 'blobbular' (a term I use frequently with this type of older plant landscaping that has been pruned into balls) and should be updated to reflect your architectural style--whichever way that might go. From the picture it really looks like the porch is stuck on and it should be enlarged, softened, and enhanced to create more of a presence in the entry sequence. you want your guests, or you yourself if this is the way you come and go everyday, to be comfortable and intrigued by the time you get to the top of all those stairs. The rockery could be reworked into a more refined wall, or left rustic, but it will be hard to match the color of that old stone if you need/want to make it larger. Paint color and landscaping ideas needed!

Hi Ka12 I talked to the painter next door yesterday and he had no idea why the formula was on on the can so I called Sherwin Williams this morning and he looked up the paint and said for you to call your Sherwin Williams in your area and give them this order number 2197-0073576 They will look it up and make it. I had several browns before I chose but had to much red in the paint so I searched and searched and came up with Bronze tone less red in it. Good luck with your paint job when it happens , hope you show it on here would love to see it. . Keep in touch I love the areas 2 hours north of me, was going to build up in St.A. but Hubby says its warmer in the winters here boo hoo but do love it up that way a lot. World of golf was one place we were going but decided Orlando Airport is closer for our kids. So see we still think and worry about our kids getting here easy. Happy house you will have just like me.The new house going up next to us is painting hers Koi Pond by Sher. w. I think it will be nice next to us . So many homes in our area remind me of a military base so many in the same color category so I had to be different. So, kind friends, my landscape-architect friend is coming for Labor Day, but I'm still brainstorming, so what do you think of this? (1) yes replace CLFence w/ white lattice and nice trellis entry, but mainly (2) move big planter with statue to side under mulberry, balancing the Mahonia on the right (toughest plant they cd sell me at my request), and make rustic stepping-stone pathway up to very top near fence, then pave that little area and put bench or 2 ice-cream-parlor-sized chairs and table? Balance in front of right hand side Mahonia by cutting maple down to graduating heights from path, with plants on top of each trunk, or maybe plants on two and interesting topiary frame currently on top of too-tall trunk; (3) stick 3 potted plants, maybe all in one planter (have silver one on hand decorated with green leaves & little red berries) on top of grill for when not in use (usually!). (4) Consider same white lattice fence ()slightly higher than current) to replace current natural lattice fence in back of new furniture OR replace natural lattice with garden wall in interesting color such as I've been seeing on this site, maybe with short lattice strip across top. (5) I'll go out this weekend and get a patio table umbrella to see if it helps. If not, I expect I'll be stuck paying at least $5K for a pergola. I plan to be in this house for the duration, but for the sake of resale value, I wonder wd it be worthwhile to design pergola so that it's basically just the underpinnings of a roof, in case the next owner wants to cover it. Comments, anyone?

Whenever I move to a new location I spend hours walking around my neighborhood noticing what grows well, and what plants I'm attracted to. I take pictures. Next stop is a full-service local nursery or two or three (NOT big box). The staff is usually knowledgeable about local growing conditions, and they carry plants that do well in your area. Two online resources are Garden Web (access from this site) and Dave's Garden. Check your state Extension Service website, too. They may have lists of ornamental plants, including natives, that will work for you. Good luck in your new home.

All of those japonicas are marvelous. As individual cut blooms they would be far superior to a sasanqua. For the greatest profusion of garden color, however, it is hard to equal a sasanqua in full bloom. And it grows more quickly and is easier to train on a wall. Whites show more brightly in shade. In the end, it is what you like that counts.

For the record, my 'chandler elegans' and 'Nuccio's Pearl' have yet to bloom in the shade, and it has been two years. However, I am not a super-experienced camellia person, so I might be doing something else wrong.

Any tips would be much appreciated by me as well! All over the area I see lovely camellias, but not mine.
