I had a bit of a question about Pygmys, actually -- figured posting in here would be better than a whole new thread. I read recently in the forum here that you do NOT want to repot these, as their roots really, really don't like to be disturbed.
I recently (day before yesterday actually) made an order with a company I've had a lot of good luck with for a Drosera pulchella x nitidula (picked because Mr. D'Amato's book has it listed as his favorite Pygmy, and that it's "as easy to grow as a Cape Sundew") -- but I know for a fact that they ship plants bare root, wrapped in long fiber moss.
Should I be worried about it when it arrives?
Also, petiolaris -- how big are those pots? I was going to plant mine dead center of a rather big rectangular pot I have (9" x 4" x 5" or so) in plans of having a carpet of them growing in there after a few years, but I fear I might have vastly underestimated how small those plants are. :)
An online retail store should know what they are doing and will stand by their product. so i wouldn't worry. And yes, they can easily die if the roots are disturbed. So put the plants in a what would be their final move. Mine are 3-4" pots, with a good 4" deep. The deeper the better. The plants are only about 1/-3/4" in diameter, max, and the move surface area you have, the more plants will cover.
What's a good soil mixture for them? I was going to go with my old faithful -- Peat and Perlite, 50/50. Should I try some sand (Either Washed River Sand or White Sand) instead of Perlite, perhaps?
