Yellow Limp Cactus

Hello:

I received a small potted cactus as a gift. I went away for a week and I came home to find the cactus covered in white fuzz ant it's turned yellow. It's also limp.

I tried crushing the white fungus to see if it's cochineal scale, but it didn't turn red.

Is there anyway to save this little guy?

Looks like Opuntia (Consolea) rubescens. Likely it is toast if it gets limp enough to hang like that. White stuff might have been mealie bugs, but looks like they were not the cause of the demise.

Muy muerte!

You might get lucky if you cut the green part off. One has to keep cutting (cleaning off your knife) till you have good looking clean flesh.No discoloration. It will only work with TOTALLY rot free flesh. Powder it with cinnamon and treat for bugs. and let it callus for a week and then put in dirt and mist till it is rooted. You might get a plant out of it, but it is iffy at best.

Personally I would toss it. A common plant, and not worth the mealy bug battle...Probably best to toss pot and all. Just my opinion.

I would agree with Christopher. It is iffy and it can continue contaminating everything else. I just gave the info because people can be very sentimental about their plants and love to nurse their sick ones.
