Ancient Orange Tree Question

Hi all,

Our cottage in Los Angeles came with an ancient orange tree in the backyard, which the realtor's gardeners pruned back (i.e. butchered pretty much) right before we moved in. I didn't know what I was looking at at the time - but they cut back all the branches harshly - 4-5 inch branches chopped all over. This was last April. It then put out a TON of new growth, a little of which I slowly cut back according to the advice of an arborist - mostly inner crossing branches, trunk branches etc - but didn't get it thinned very much, afraid to do too much at a time.

It's just started to bloom - and I mean, ALL over the tree, suddenly I see buds absolutely everywhere. Which is great - but I worry that all these tiny new branches won't be able to support all that fruit - most of them are pencil-thick - brand-new growth.

Thoughts? Should I prune out some smaller branches before the fruit sets or just leave it be?

Any advice appreciated!
