I am no expert- but I thought Ostrich Ferns are were huge tough guys that you put in the ground- and once established they would send runners all over the place till they filled an area up. I am not sure at all if they are suited to container growing. I don't think missing a frond will hurt it much- some ferns like fiddelhead fronds are harvested to eat at the table! I wouldn't try to eat one unless I knew for sure it was safe though...

They are GREAT in containers!! I cut out all sorts of them from my garden last year and potted them up. They were great for greenery and height in shady pots. I put several containers on my porch and deck just full of Ostrich ferns I dug out of my garden. I LOVED them! And they were the right price! They may not survive for next year, but who cares as they are very prolific spreaders and there are always new ones the next year to take. As for broken, they do not fix themselves until next year. They continually send new growth though so cutting out the damaged may not be a bad idea.
