Can anyone tell me how to keep Frithia pulchra from melting away on me. Everyone I've had has perished. I have one now that is wilting even as it is pushing out new leaves.
Thanks senj, I did check cactiguide. I'm in the Northeast, New York City area, and have some challenges with mesembs and others when I bring them indoors
I haven't been able to keep one alive, either. I'm aware now that I've overwatered to death in the past, but I haven't been brave enough to give it another go since I've learned to tame my watering habits.
Frithia pulchra is one of the more acidophilic mesembs! It really needs slightly acidic water. Also, unlike most mesembs, they come from summer rainfall areas so are most active during the warmer months (as opposed to other mesembs that are best in the autumn).
Winter indoors is a challenge indeed. Keep them as cold as possible so they are dormant, which will reduce their need for strong light. In my many years of experience, success is more likely to be had if you focus your resources on keeping temps cold rather than going crazy with adequate lighting.
You could leave some mesembs in the fridge all winter long without real harm.
