Stem length on zinnias

goodscents

My zinnias have started blooming and now I have a harvest question. The plants are about as tall as I could expect - maybe 2 feet right now - but the individual stems on the flowers are much shorter. The longer I cut the stem, the more side shoots I will take out.

How do other people do this? Do you sacrifice the whole plant for a really long stem? Sacrifice the first bloom and get longer side shoots? Settle for shorter stems earlier in the season? I know later in the season last year the plants (and stems) were much taller, but I can't remember what I did when they first started.

As always, thanks for everyone's help.

Kirk
