Hummingbird born with underdeveloped wing

Hi Hummingbird Enthusiasts:

My mother has found a young hummer that was born with one of it's wings underdeveloped. Her neighbor came to her knowing my mother's love for hummingbirds- it was on the ground and unable to fly.. more or less abandoned by it's mother. The left wing is not developed and as a result, it can't fly. It still had baby feathers... but the bird has progressed as well as can be expected. She has been taking care of it for 2 weeks now. My mother is wondering what should be done.. She spoke to a hummingbird rescue and the woman was not nice to her at all...My mom doesn't want the bird to die, but clearly this bird will never be able to live in the outside world. Any suggestions? Thank you so much.

Hi Adeva,

First off, I'm sorry the hummingbird rescue in your state wasn't nice to your mom...especially as she was obviously trying to help. :(

Go to this website and look up a wildlife rehabilitation center for your state (I volunteer for a local one in Arizona and they take in at least a few injured hummers every year). Have your mom bring it in to them asap. It's actually illegal to keep migratory birds without a permit... but more importantly, wildlife rehabbers will know just what to do with the hummer.

Baby hummers need a lot more than just sugar water-- insects are a big part of the diet, and sugar water alone fed to them for more than a few days can actually -cause- deformities like the one this hummer has.

If your mom really loves hummingbirds please have her call someone asap so that this little guy will have the best chance... by being cared for by people who have past experience with hummers.

Thank you for posting the information... I appreciate your help. I will contact someone and tell them the situation.
My mom has been giving the bird insects for protein along with a supplement and sugar water. It really is heartbreaking watching this little guy trying to fly...
