Part 1: Iris and their companions - * photos galore *

I love bearded iris! They were the first plant group I ever collected. But like any diva, they really need a supporting cast in order to show to their best advantage. Over the years I have been rearranging my plants like furniture, trying to match bloom times and color coordinate. Gradually I'm getting some nice combinations that are consistent from year to year. I thought you might like to see them.

Nobody does it like you, Gottagarden. Each photo is more wonderful than the last. This is how irises were meant to be used in the garden.

Brenda, can I copy these photos to the American Iris Society's Facebook page? More people should see what you do in the garden.

Glad you liked the photos. I love iris, and walk around with my nose in them all to sample their scent.

No, you didn't put me on the spot. I think I will post them to FB myself, just to need to find a little extra time to do it. May watermark them as well.

    3 months until iris season!

Yes, that is peonies. Not quite open yet. Some are open that early - like Dancing Butterflies.

Beautiful photos. If you have time, could you name the iris names with the corresponding photos? Also, are you open to sharing who you buy them from?

    Thank you!

I see just-about-to-bloom peonies in the second to last photo.
The groupings in those photos are astounding. Must have taken years of planning and work.

Iris are indeed spectacularly showy, I just wish there was a perpetually reblooming strain :)

But their cycle of growth (produce fan, mature fan, produce terminal inflorescence) pretty much prohibits that idea.

Thanks for bringing this back around, posierosie! I remember still being a lurker when I was so inspired by her beautiful gardens. gottagarden had a knack for plant placement, that's for sure.

It's good seeing Iris interspersed throughout the garden like this. I planted 'Batik' last year and will be so happy if it looks like the ones pictured here.

I'm not sure as I am not a regular on this forum, but people come in and out. Talking about lovely pictures, will we be seeing some poppies from you again BellaRosa? I tried last year and the potting soil I used for annual types was too wet. :(. I'm trying again, though! I loved seeing your pictures.

  • bella rosa

Awh, thanks, posierosie! The answer is yes. Try the winter sowing method for growing poppies. there's a great forum on facebook and here. i was able to grow poppies with no problem using that method. good luck and don't forget to post your pics.
