It depends on the deer :-) Some report no damage to their hydrangeas by deer and others find it high on their menu choices. Guess it depends on the range of edibles available in that specific locale.

In my area, hydrangeas of any kind are appealing to deer. YMMV

We have Hydrangeas here for 50 years with absolutely no deer damage, until this year. Old established plants were eaten to the ground this year. The cost of a deer fence around 6 acres of woods is beyond my means. If this continues I will be limited to growing only poisonous plants. Al

What about bird netting over your deer prone plants? I used it in the past over hostas until we got a tall fence.

Yup. They do here....but Liquid Fence stops them. I planted 2 new plants last week and forgot to spray them. This evening I found a deer munching on the new (and not sprayed) big leaf hydrangeas and ignoring the hydrangeas right next to them that are sprayed. I have over 100 hydrangeas so it gets tedious and expensive spraying them though.

If you can find it, the ~$32 jug of Liquid Fence concentrate is worth it. It should treat a decent 5000 sq ft for a solid two growing seasons, if applied every 1-2 weeks. Use one of those "3x" spray bottles from Walmart, shake jug of concentrate, add about 3/8" to bottle, fill with water, shake bottle to mix. Use the whole bottle if you can, broadcasting. When empty, rinse bottle out twice and flush sprayer well to prevent clogging. Let dry for next use. Keep tight lid on concentrate jug and store in a cool place year-round.

Thanks everyone! Not really wanting to mess with netting. I have used liquid fence before and it is awesome. I used it a bunch on my roses til we put up an electric fence. Think I will chance it and just spray with LF. Thanks
