Is this even a maple?

Hi all,

I have a couple of seedlings I've been wondering if are perhaps not-true-to-parent offspring of a nearby 'Bloodgood' Japanese maple. They're seven-lobed, light green, somewhat pronounced veining. The seedling in the picture is at least two, maybe three years old. The thing that's throwing me is that the stems (which are not woody) are covered with soft spines. Is this possible? Or am I looking for an ID in the wrong plant family entirely?
