The sad thing is that we have had some rain/snow/sleet in many areas the last couple of months, but it just isn't falling heavily enough to make a big impact on the drought conditions.

However, there is some good news.

The Palmer Long-Term Map that attempts to answer the questions of "How much rain do we need?" does show some improvement.

For quite some time now, most of us have been in the 9-12" or 12-15" category. On the most recent map, those two categories no longer are found on the Oklahoma map. So, we're making some progress....albeit very slowly.

Last year at our house we had great rainfall from September through March and saw a lot of drought recovery. This year, the recovery is slower to occur, but we'll take any improvement we can get.

We have had good drought recovery--almost instant drought recovery--at our house on two occasions.

On April 29, 2006, we got rain all over the county, but in a very small portion of the county (including at our home) we had 9.25", most of which fell in a four hour period. That huge rainfall pretty much ended the 2005-2006 drought for us. Then, on April 29, 2009. we had 12.89" fall in a 24-hour period. Of course, flash flooding occurred, some roadways washed out or collapsed, etc. but it sure did put a halt to the drought of 2008-2009. Based on this, I am hoping for good rainfall on April 29, 2013. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride....
