ants on plants

ok im sure this has been discussed but why do ants climb all over bloosoms,is it necessary or is it a fluke tell me why smart people.this year i noticed alot less of this than normal yes weve had a cool spring here.fyi their just starting to bloom here now.

Ants are attracted by the sweet nectar secreted by the peony buds. They are not necessary for the peonies to bloom, but they do no harm.

Would this mean that the ants would try to establish a nest close by if the conditions were good to do so?
I have a peony that is in a very sandy area.

Any ants you see on the peonies are from close by. Except for certain tropical ants most do not travel far. Ants are good as they help clean up messes ours and natures.
