Pruning Very Large Wisteria

mdawdy

My wisteria is more than 30 years old, possibly more than 40. It was started by a former owner of the property. It consists of two plants growing on a very large trellis constructed of pressure treated wood. It is about 35 feet wide, 10 feet high, and overlaps front and back about 5 feet each way.

The trellis is leaning now from the weight. It may not actually fall down, perhaps not for a few years anyway. I am concerned about this possibility, and also what may happen in winter when it gets a heavy snowfall on it.

So i think i need to remove a large amount of it. But where to start? Two choices i see:

1. Start at the bottom and remove some of the large branches

2. Start at the top and remove many of the long viney branches.

Either way, or any way, it is a messy job. Any advice is appreciated.

Mike
