Help identifying a shrub, lav./rosemary? White residue?

My husband found a shrub which had been set out on the curb. I haven't seen it in person yet, but I was wondering if anyone could help identify it. He said the leaves have a smell, but he can't identify it. I think he would recognize lavender, but maybe not. Rosemary? If it helps, he also said when he carried it it left a white residue on his shirt (let's hope that doesn't mean mildew!). Any ideas? Thanks!

It looks like Lavender to me. It tends to get woody with age. Maybe you can get cuttings off of the greener branches. Lucky find!

Could be a form of artemesia, too. If it is, it's deer-proof (poisonous).

Thanks for the responses! Now that it's started to grow, I can tell it's definitely lavender! It's a little scraggly but a nice big plant.

Great to hear that he "rescued it" from demise. Are there any new photos of the plant in it's healthy stage?
