House style and cost to build

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for any insight you can give.

I have read that simple house styles are less expensive to build, which makes sense. Our first version of our plan was NOT simple. We've worked with the designer to straighten out jogs in the foundation, and are happy with the footprint and roofline. Basically we have 2 rectangles with one bump out. In doing this, and a couple of other revisions, we wound up about 4-600 SF larger than we intended, or about 3600 SF. Designer tells us we can build this simpler plan at 3600 for about the same as a more complex 3200 house.

Of course we can cut square footage, but if it really is that much less expensive to build simply, then we'd prefer to keep the extra footage.
