venting about an unvented fan!

The exhaust fan in the bathroom of my 14 year old house stopped working. So, I took a look at it to see if I could replace the motor, and I discovered that the builder had installed a fan, but neglected to vent it anywhere. There is just a boxed recess in the ceiling big enough to house the fan assembly, but no duct above it to carry the moist air away! Unbelievable! I would imagine that the builder cheated and did the same thing for the other bathrooms in the house as well. There is no window in this room, so a fan vented to the outside is code. I guess the city inspector only flipped the switch to see that the fan "worked" without really inspecting it to see if it was installed properly.

So, now I have to figure out how to get it installed correctly and will have to cut a hole in the attic floor and the roof to get it vented right.

Does anyone have a suggesting as to what kind of contractor to call? Roofer? Plumber? Electrician? General handyman?

Electricians will do this work, but so would almost any general handyman, and the handyman should be cheaper.

If you have any diy skills at all this isn't hard to do yourself. It's just a matter of buying and connecting the right size metal duct work to the fan and running it to a gable vent at the end of your house, if you've got gable vents, and most houses do.

Contractors who do insulation and roofing could be a good choice too. There was a similar situation in my house - fans were venting into the attic, not outside. '_' We did two of our fans ourselves, but when we hired someone to redo the insulation in the attic we negotiated to have them run the last fan duct for us while they were up there. Again, they're roofing and insulation, so they know how to seal the opening for the vent and also how to deal with the attic side of things too.
