It's actually a window, one of a pair that would have flanked an entry way door. This allows for natural light to flow from one room to the other, without compromising privacy.

The bedspread is made from fabric found in Sri Lanka from BareFoot, who uses traditional weaving methods native to the area, but incorporates more contemporary designs.
