a regular drill bit won't work, but a small grinding head either in a dremel tool or even in a pin vise works just great. I have a small, cone-shaped bit that I use for drilling holes in coin blanks, shells, and bunches of things-

these are the bits that look like a stone, not the 'burr' bits, or the diamond bits- the diamond bits cut really fast, but need to be water-cooled if used with power tools- and unless you have a flex-shaft for your dremel, water and power don't mix.

I'm all for ancient techniques- but I don't have 5 minutes to drill a single hole in a single shell.
