Bamboo Floor Installation Question (nail gauge)

Good afternoon everyone.

I've been a long-time lurker of the GardenWeb and finally decided it was time I asked a question.

I recently purchased 1/2" thick Yanchi Bamboo flooring from BuildDirect. Their installation instructions state that one should use 15-gauge flooring nails/staples. My issues are as follows:

1. I'm concerned that 15-gauge maybe too thick and splinter/split the flooring.
2. Most flooring nailers I've found are 16-gauge and 18-gauge. The only reasonably priced 15-gauge flooring nailer I found had a note that said "Do not use with Bamboo floors."

Could I get away with using an 18-gauge L cleat for the flooring installation? Is there a negative outcome for using the thinner gauge nail/cleat than the recommended size?

And yes, I currently have the question submitted to Yanchi. However, the only Email they provided were "sales" so I can only hope they reply.

Thanks for your time!
GH
