vacation painting projects

I am taking a "chore" vacation in a week, to get some painting done. I'll be painting my bathrooms and doing some exterior painting. In regard to the exterior, I plan to paint my aluminum garage door, and my steel entry door. I've done a lot of interior painting, so no problem there but I would like some advice regarding the exterior metal doors. The garage door is the original factory finish, but its worn off in places. My plan is to wash it, lightly sand, prime and paint. Should I use an oil base primer with an acrylic paint? Or should I use a water based primer instead? As for the steel entry door, that already has been painted with latex several years ago, due for another painting. Can I get away with just cleaning and painting, and skip the primer ? Any tips would be appreciated.
