So...paint over stain over paint?

I tried to stain a cabinet that had been previously painted, thinking I could sand enough of the surface away to make it work. I was wrong. Now I have a cab with one coat of stain primer and one of blotchy stain. I have to paint the cabinet now. How long must I wait for the stain to dry before I attempt to paint it? I primed and stained yesterday and the stain still stinks. Can I just prime and paint, or do I have to sand again, then prime and paint?

Thanks for the info.

If there is an odor from the previous coat - that is telling you that it has not yet cured.

I would wait - atleast several days for it to cure. Then use a 180 grit paper to smoothe the surface, vacuum, and use a tack cloth - then paint with an acrylic semi-gloss.

Thanks Geoffrey. I did that, more or less. I used an oil based primer followed by a high gloss enamel, which, by the way, I wish I'd sprayed on. So far, so good though. At least it's not blotchy any more.
