Hi! The fireplace surround and wall behind the shelves is a metal that was chemically treated to create an aged worn look. The shelves are espresso stained wood. I can not remember the exact metal or chemicals used, but you could contact the place that did it, Bauer Custom Welding of St. Paul, MN. Thanks for your question! http://bauercustomwelding.com/
